John Magness opened Hillwood's West Coast office over eighteen years ago. The original project, AllianceCalifornia™, redeveloped Norton Air Force Base through public/private partnership.  Under his development and management, the multimodal industrial/logistics park has grown to 2,000 acres with Kohl's, Mattel, Stater Bros., Pactiv, Pep Boys, and Amazon as anchor tenants.


Now leading a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the region, John oversees the development of ten more projects totaling over 1,000 acres. Additionally, he manages Hillwood's key e-commerce client relationships, which has resulted in an additional 23M SF nationally over the past eight years.


Before joining Hillwood in 1998, John served as a consultant to the United Arab Emirates government. John, a Desert Storm veteran, served nine years in the United States Army with roles as commander, staff officer, and pilot. His last assignment was as Operations Officer and Pilot with the famed Task Force 160 Night Stalkers, an elite Special Operations Aviation unit. In this unit, John participated in numerous combat missions, including the Battle of the Black Sea in Mogadishu, Somalia, which was depicted in the movie and book, "Black Hawk Down." He is also an author, having published Pilot Vision in 1999. John and his wife, Angie, reside in Southern California.


With over 40M SF of development across the U.S., John is a recognized leader in large scale master-plan development, brownfield clean-up, military base redevelopment, airport development, logistics, e-commerce, and environmentally responsible industrial development. 


John holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point and earned his Master of Business Administration from Boston University.
